AI Notetaker for Phone Calls

This article covers how to set up phone calls, how to let the person on the other end know you’re recording, and what happens to the Note after you hang up.

You can now make outgoing phone calls from the Blinq app and have AI Notetaker capture a Note while you talk. Your Note is transcribed, summarized, and linked to who you spoke with - the same way it works for regular Notes.

Setting up AI Notetaker for phone calls

The first time you use AI Notetaker for phone calls, Blinq will walk you through two quick steps.

1. Verify your phone number

Blinq needs to verify the phone number you want to use is really yours. To do this, we give you a one-time code. You’ll then receive a phone call. Answer the call, and enter the code to finish verification.

2. Decide if you want an automatically played consent message

Blinq can play a short audio message at the start of every call, letting the other person know AI Notetaker is on. It says:

"Blinq's AI Notetaker is transcribing this call."

You choose whether to turn this on. You can tap the audio preview to hear the audio message before you decide. You can turn this on or off any time later in Notetaker settings.

Whichever option you choose, you're still responsible for getting consent - see Asking for consent before you capture a Note

Note: When your automatic audio consent message is toggled on, the other person will hear it. However, you won’t. To experience what they will hear on their end, use the audio preview button.

How it works

Calling from the Notetaker tab

Open the Notetaker tab, tap the phone icon, and choose who to call. When they answer, a Note will begin recording.

While you talk, AI Notetaker records the conversation and turns it into a transcript and summary. When you hang up, the Note will process and appear in your Notetaker tab.

Calling from Keypad

Tap on keypad to dial any number that you don’t have saved in your contacts. You can also copy/paste numbers. If dialing an international number, you can long-press 0 for +.

Calling from a Contact’s profile

From the Contacts tab, go to any Blinq contact. Tap their listed phone number, and select “Call with AI Notetaker”. This will dial their number. When they answer, a Note will begin recording.

Calling from your device’s phone book (iOS only)

If you’re on iOS, you can also use AI Notetaker from your mobile device’s phonebook.

Starting from your Phone app, find who you want to call. On their contact information, long press the phone icon. This will bring up a list of options including Blinq. Tap Blinq, then tap the phone number to start the call. When they answer, a Note will begin recording.

Asking for consent

Getting consent is your responsibility.

The automatic audio message tells the other person the call is being recorded - wait for them to agree before continuing with the conversation. Consent laws vary by jurisdiction and your organisation’s policies may also apply-make sure you’re authorised to record. The message is a courtesy, not a substitute for getting their agreement.

If you choose not to turn on the automatic audio consent message, you are still responsible for telling the other person you’re recording using AI Notetaker. A short line at the start of the call works well:

"Before we begin, I'm using Blinq’s AI Notetaker to record and summarize this call. Are you okay with that?"

If they're not OK with being recorded, end the call.

For more on consent - including which jurisdictions require everyone's agreement - see Asking for consent before you capture a Note.

After the call ends

After the call ends, a transcript and AI-generated summary will appear in two places, the same as any other Notetaker Note:

  • In your Notetaker tab

  • On the Contact's profile, if the call was linked to a Blinq Contact.

Linking a Contact

A Note is more useful when it lives on a Contact. When you save a Note, you can attach it to one or more of your Blinq Contacts - or create a new Contact right then if you've just met them.

Linking a Contact to a Note does not share the Note with the other person. The Note remains private and only visible to you, unless you choose to share it (see Sharing and Exporting).

When you call someone who isn’t in your Blinq Contacts yet, you can save them as a Contact right from the Note. Tap the + in the Contacts section of the Note. At the top of the list, a contact will be suggested, with the number you dialed pre-populated. Add the person’s name (and any other details, like their company), then tap Create.

Your data: What Blinq stores (and what it doesn't)

Phone call Notes are handled a little differently from in-person Notes:

  • The transcript and summary are saved to your Note, the same as any other Note. You can read, edit, and share them from inside Blinq.

  • The audio is not stored. Unlike in-person Notes, phone call audio is discarded as soon as the transcript is generated.

  • You can delete a Note any time. Open the Note and delete it - the transcript and summary go together. Deleted notes are removed from the app immediately and purged from our backup systems within 30 days.

For the full picture on what's stored across all Notes, see our privacy policy.

If your Business has phone calls turned off

Some Blinq Business admins choose to keep AI Notetaker on for in-person Notes but turn off phone calls separately. If that's your setup, you'll see a message when you tap the phone icon explaining the feature has been disabled by your admin.

If you need it switched on, talk to your Blinq admin.

If something goes wrong

A few things to check if a phone call Note didn't come out right:

  • Call didn't connect. Phone calls run over an internet connection. If you're on patchy signal or weak Wi-Fi, try the call again when you have a stronger connection.

  • No transcript or summary. Very short calls or calls with long silences may produce a transcript without a useful summary. The Note is still there - open it to read what was captured.

Still stuck? Contact Support here or from inside the app.

If you want to change or remove your phone number

If you need to use another phone number to use with Blinq’s AI Notetaker, contact Support here or from inside the app.

If you want to remove your phone number to disable the feature, contact Support here or from inside the app.
